A huge thank you to
Ethos Lab!
For the Science Magic Show & Blackathon 2025!

In celebration of Black History / Black Futures Month in February 2025, the PAC funded a series of 5 workshops with Ethos Lab. They were successfully hosted during the school day for all students on January 23rd and 24th!
What is Ethos Lab?
Ethos Lab is an inclusive, Black-led organization whose programs serve ALL youth from grades 5 to 12. Their focus is on centering the Black experience and promoting the representation of diverse voices in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (S.T.E.A.M.) fields. They empower youth with "core skills and the self-belief needed to pursue post-secondary education and career paths that are innovative" with the primary aim of encouraging students to take on leadership roles in their community and beyond.
Ethos Lab so kindly volunteered their time at our first Science Fair in June and has since provided several scholarships to DLG students to participate in their summer camps and afterschool youth groups. Through various partnerships and grants, Ethos is able to offer scholarships to youth who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Colour (BIPOC) or as a youth in financial need.
Tell me about the workshops!
The workshops were designed to engage all DLG students in a learning journey that fuses S.T.E.A.M. concepts with Black history and culture. K-3 students attended a 1-hour Science Magic show where they demonstrated a number of fun science experiments (i.e., elephant toothpaste). Students in grades 4 to 7 participated in one of four 90-minute "Blackathon" workshops (each workshop will have about 50-60 students split into groups of 6-8). In this workshop, students learned about a Black Inventor while hacking an inclusive and accessible invention with a group of their peers. This activity was designed to spark creativity, promote teamwork, recognize the importance of representation in S.T.E.A.M. for young Black students, and acknowledge the contributions of Black inventors to our modern world.

These workshops were held during the school day and all students had the opportunity to participate.
